IX PROVINCIAL CHAPTER – ZMB

Lusaka (ZAMBIA) 02-05/04/2019. On Friday 5, April 2019, the Salesians of Don Bosco in ZMB have concluded the IX Provincial Chapter of ZMB. It has been a joyful moment of reflection and discernment for all the confreres. The participation was remarkable and the various moments were marked by deep prayer, a desire to discern the will of God for ZMB today and also good moments of fraternal sharing. Right Rev. Bishop Clement Mulenga SDB, participated as an observer, together with Sr. Chanda Nsofwa, Sr. Godelive Kayobera and Mrs. Ireene Sikazwe, the provincial coordinator of the Salesian Cooperators of ZMB.

The IX Provincial Chapter began on Tuesday 2, April 2019. The Archbishop of Lusaka, Right Rev. Doctor Alick Banda graced the provincial event with this presence and he presided over the opening mass. He was very affectionate towards the sons of Don Bosco and he also challenged them to give a deep thought to the issue of the street kids of Lusaka.

The meeting was solemnly opened at 9hrs of Tuesday with the invocation of the Holy Spirit and the lighting up of a candle. The moderator of the Chapter, Fr Oswald Mulenga SDB, did a splendid job in harmonizing all the efforts in the meeting. He chaired the meeting and gracefully made the programme flow during the four days of the Chapter.

On the First Day, the Provincial of ZMB read his report on the Status of the Vice-Province, and so did the Provincial Economer, Brother Walter Thyrniang SDB. The confreres were very attentive to all the details and they were very active in their interventions. It was a good atmosphere all in all. Before the presentation of the reports, a group of young people presented a topic on the Today’s Youth Situation. They made a very powerful reflection and their presentation contributed to give a framework to the rest of the reflections.

In the afternoon of the first day, the Chapter began the group work on the various units of the Instrumentum Laboris. The document was divided up according to the various topics. The groups spent a good deal of time reflecting on the findings coming from the communities. On the second and third days the Chapter had the full session to share the group works and approve the editing made to the document. It was a very taxing work but the chapter members pulled up their socks and made a good use of the time. In the evenings, there were moments of relaxation and interaction. There was a very fraternal atmosphere.

On the third day, the chapter dwelt on the various articles of the Provincial Directory. The Moderator had divided them up for each of the groups to make modifications and amendments.

On the last day, the chapter members, allocated time to have the election of the delegate to the General Chapter, and the election fell on Fr Christopher Kunda SDB, the Provincial Youth Delegate. After the election of the delegate, the Chapter Members spent some time in the various topics brought about as points of reflection (A.O.B) and finally there was an evaluation of the Chapter.

The chapter ended at 13hrs local time of Friday 5, April 2019.

THE STRENGTH OF PARTNERSHIP

26|09\2019: LUWISHA HOUSE, SOCIETY OF JESUS PROVINCIAL DEVELOPMENT OFFICE; LUSAKA-ZAMBIA.
The Salesian’s Provincial Development Office and the Development Office of the Society of Jesus held a meeting that was aimed at uniting the two and many other Religious congregations in capacity building. The two parties discussed on how well they could make use of media to advocate for their missions, creating awareness that will hold the same value, how they could work hand in hand to be able to sustain the congregations and finally how the two could work together in building capacity of its members and the beneficiaries of various missions that we are all called to. The two parties pursued to identify the gaps in their respective congregations and see how best one could be of help to the other.

2019 RECTORS’ MEETING – ZMB

Lusaka (ZAMBIA) 24-25/09/2019 : Annual Rectors’ Meeting ZMB. Rectors from the four ZMB Countries (Malawi, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia) gathered at the provincial house to participate in the annual meeting for Rectors and Local Superiors of ZMB Vice Province. The meeting began on Tuesday 24 September and it was presided over by the provincial of ZMB, Fr Christopher Rychcik SDB. The main facilitator of the meeting was Fr Tresphord Chota SDB, Rector of Harare Community and Mission Delegate of ZMB who presented the Missionary Option of the Salesian Congregation in view of the forthcoming General Chapter 28.

On the second day, Fr Christopher Kunda SDB, the Provincial Youth Delegate of ZMB, presented a report on the meeting held in Madagascar where Youth Ministry and Mission Animation were seen from the perspective of synergy for better impact on the world today.

The meeting ended with general information and suggestions for the Provincial Calendar 2020.

TEVETE STRENGTHENING MEETING FOR SALESIAN SCHOOLS

13/04/2019. Kapiri Mposhi: Central Province Zambia. The Managers of the Salesian Schools in Zambia, Selected teachers and ZMB Planning and Development staff met in Kapiri-Mposhi to discuss how these institutions may strengthen the system of vocational education in the province. This is in line with the Strategic Plan of the Commission for Schools which the PDO has adopted. The meeting Challenged Schools to work hand in hand and making a unified system of education in the schools that we ran as a province.
The meeting began with a Eucharistic cerebration followed by sets of presentations on how best we could unify our systems of education in Zambia as we Work on the Mission of Don Bosco. Thanks to the managers and the teachers for the greater work as we look forward to strengthening the education of the young in the province.

CONCLUSION OF EXTRA-ORDINARY VISITATION

The Extra-ordinary Visitation in the vice-province of ZMB reached its fruition on 28th March 2016. Fr. Americo Chaquisse Raul sdb, the regional for Africa-Madagascar met the Provincial and his council at the end of his extra-ordinary visitation. The Vespers was solemnly prayed and that marked the conclusion of his visitation. After that, Fr. George Chalissery, the provincial gave a sincere word of thanks for his pain-staking visitation. Fr. Americo gave his concluding remarks in way of giving good night. He gave a lot appreciation for the salesians who are contributing a lot in the province. He said that what he witnessed in the province is quite different that he heard from others about the province. Personal experience is more laudable than coming with prejudice. After this, we had agape. The Salesian novices, Salesian sisters and Salesian Cooperators were also present. On the same day, the newly constructed PDO office was solemnly blessed and inaugurated by Fr. Americo.

BLESSING OF A NEW CHAPEL IN KALABA

Mansa (ZAMBIA) 12/09/2019. Blessing of the Divine Mercy Chapel in Kalaba Village. The bishop of Mansa, Right. Rev. Patrick Chisanga OFM blessed and officially opened to the public worship a chapel dedicated to the Divine Mercy of Jesus in Kalaba Village (Mansa Diocese, Zambia).

The contruction of the Chapel dedicated to the Divine Mercy was made possible through the generous help from the Salesian Missions of New Rochelle (USA) who through the Chapels Programme funded the construction of the chapel.
The parish priest of St James Parish, Fr Javier Barrientos, under whose jurisdiction is Kalaba village, thanked God for the blessings bestowed on the people of Kalaba, who undertook the construction of the chapel.

Bishop Patrick emphasized the importance of building the people of God, as much as a building was dedicated to the worship of God.
Although it was a weekday, the people from Kalaba made a halt to their daily activities to witneess such an important event. Over 500 people gathered to the nearly 4-hour ceremony in which the Bishop of Mansa blessed the new building.
